Happy New Year Everyone!! Can you believe that The Selling Lounge is now 16 months old! What a pleasant surprise to observe several of you using the valuable recourses that all the members have added to the forum. We can’t thank you enough for all your participation and positive interaction with each other which has made learning fun!

The Selling Lounge was started back in September 2008 as a place for all of us sellers to learn and to help each other, and boy you guys sure know how to make things happen! The positive interaction is just beyond words and being there to help your online friends is invaluable. You Guys So Rock and I couldn’t be prouder of a great bunch of people!

The Selling Lounge has grown vastly over the last 16 months since we opened our doors to online sellers. We have 622 members to date, 24911 Total posts, and 2796 Total topics.

We as you all know have so many members to thank for their time in not only adding important content to the forum, however for being here to help other online sellers with all your valuable information. The Selling Lounge wants to take this time to thank you for being you and for being here!

In this forum I have said more than once and with no doubt more than twice, without this lounge/forum Keleka’s Kollections would not be up and running.

I started this business due to a home based jewelry business where my clients would ask me “Why don’t you have a website” so I then decided to put my jewelry on a website…Well it is not that simple, there is marketing, learning how to submit to major search engines, using the correct keywords, tagging, RSS feeds,blogging etc. the list is endless! This is where I feel a angel guided me towards the Selling Lounge and once I found it I stayed!

The Selling Lounge owner Debi has the patience of a saint and through countless emails has taught me new informative strategies to help my website grow in the direction I had planned. Also in the lounge you will find on-line sellers who go out of their way to help you if you have a problem and they do this effortless, I know now these are all people which whom I never met or spoke with I can now without question call my friends.

Having been a moderator at the Selling Lounge for a long time , I can only tell you I am with some of the hardest working people in this industry. On-line business owners who never give up , they remain optimistic even when things sometimes aren’t going as well as they should.

I am happy to say I now have a few successful on line businesses and a customer base which I am so proud of. I pride myself with customer care being the number one priority. As a owner of on-line businesses I can honestly say each sale still feels like the first sale. Words cannot explain the honor I feel when someone places a purchase on my site. The feeling is not describable!

In Closing I will say I continue learning something new everyday here at the Selling Lounge and again I know for a fact I would not still be selling online if it was not for the Selling Lounge. For some absolutely beautiful vintage jewelry that has stood the test of time, pay a visit to Evie Jewelry. Youi find gemstone jewelry, including topaz, emerald, garnets,and more. I was particularlly taken by a couple of the topaz pieces. The owner must spend many hours searching for rare or hard to find vintage jewelry pieces – both signed and unsigned and has a wonderful selection of bracelets, rings, necklaces, earrings and more. In fact, her love of vintage jewelry is obvious… and, in reading her recent blog entry, titled Go Green by Buying and Wearing Vintage Jewelry made me aware of several reasons why buying vintage jewelry is a good idea.

There is so much to see at Evie Jewelry! Being a June baby, I was curions to see what she had in the way of pearl jewelry, Oh, what a nice surprise! With gift-giving season at hand, I would be hard pressed to select the perfect gift, even after narrowing down my selection to just the pearl items, so it’s good to see that gift certificates are available, too.

Our own Sally Brown, who owns Evie Jewelry, is a veteran web seller, having been selling online since 2003. She is also versatile, owning a second store, called Evie Baby Childrens Shop, selling new clothing for Girls and Boys, including Baby Gap, Gymboree, Janie and Jack, Oskosh, Carter’s, and Guess Baby brands, along with gently used infant and toddler clothes at bargain prices.

An interesting little tidbit: The name “Evie” in both stores is in honor of Sallly’s little granddaughter.

My name is Shelly Gannon from Colorado. I started selling online in 1995. I began with a small site for our printing business. In 2000 we left our “brick & mortar” print shop & I began working from home.

One day as I was surfing the net & looking at other online bizes, I discovered Custom Candy Bar Wrappers. I thought this would be a great match with our printing biz & I decided to jump right in. Got my www.candybarwrap.com site on the internet… started taking samples to businesses & I was on my way. Later that year I discovered a company that would drop ship Custom engraved chocolates & I started www.creativecandyland.com

In 2007, a friend turned me on to www.ecrater.com & I set up a few more stores there. That same year, my friend proposed a business partnership & we began with our 1st website: www.promote-101.com then came www.earringstop.com , www.petsadored.com & more.

All along, I have been a firm believer in “more is better”. Taking the plan of the “Big Boys”…. the more stores you have on each corner… the more you will make.

In 2009, we formalized our Business Partnership & set up BlueSkiesPlus LLC. Since then, we set up so many sites that we listed them all under BlueSkiesPlusLLC website along with our blogs, my own sites & my friend’s sites.

To date, I, personally, have 13 websites, ecrater stores & zazzle galleries. I also sell during the holidays at etsy & ebay. Our Partnership is at 15 between websites, ecrater stores, buyitsellit, zazzle & bonanzle.

I have several blogs, squidoo lenses,& twitter accounts. All of our sites & my own have been set up & marketed by ourselves & we don’t pay a dime (except for any domains, store fees & hosting). I spend approx 16 hours a day / 7 days a week working on sites, adding products & marketing our sites. I do manage to clean the house & feed my kids in between all of it.

I have 2 daughters & along with working from home, I also started home schooling in 2001. They are now 19 & 13. My youngest went back to public school for middle school. Now I have a lot more time during the days.

Some Thoughts on Ecommerce and Hurricane Season

Although the Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season officially runs from June 1 to Nov 30, we have just entered the peak part of the season, which usually occurs from about the second week of August through October.

What if you live in a land-locked state? Then this has nothing to do with you, right? Wrong! Hurricane season can have a big effect on those operating their sites from or near coastal areas, but it can also affect you even if you run your ecommerce site from Idaho. Here are some actions to think about taking if your location might be affected by one of these monster storms and some things to take into consideration even if you are far, far from the sea.

IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE HURRICANE COUNTRY
Make it your business to know what systems are churning out there, and where they might be heading. Also, if a storm is affecting an area or has just done so, be familiar with where that area is, and (in general) how widespread damages and power outages are. You might have customers in the area. Don’t expect sales or communications from them just before or after a tropical system hits their area.

The same is true of your vendors or anyone you order business supplies from. Know where your vendors are for the same reasons.

Be patient! Your customers and/or vendors could very well be operating in survival mode. They may or may not have power, running water, or even a roof over their heads. And, depending on the extent of damage, that mode could last from just a few hours to weeks on end.

IF YOU LIVE IN HURRICANE COUNTRY
REMEMBER that category does NOT matter! We had thousands of dollars in damage and went for several days without power when Fay swept through last year . . . and she was “only” a Tropical Storm. You cannot operate your business by candlelight. Be prepared – not only with your disaster plans and emergency supplies kit – but also for possible downtime.

1- BACK UP YOUR SITE and everything related to it regularly, but ESPECIALLY if a system is approaching. If you are not using an internet based back-up service, pack the latest copy of your back tape or flash drive in your ‘Go Kit,’ so that it evacuates with you. I usually take my hard drive, as well.

2 – SAFEGUARD YOUR INVENTORY. Make sure it is stored in plastic and/or plastic bins, and elevated.

3 – If a storm is tracking towards your area, consider placing a NOTE on your site that you in the possible path of the storm, and anyone considering a purchase might want to complete that purchase by a certain day or time.

4 – If the NHC issues a WATCH for your area, you might want to advise customers that you downtime for your site may be imminent.

5 – If your watch is upgraded to a WARNING, consider putting your site on ‘vacation’ setting or disabling your cart. Consider the ramifications this scenario: Someone makes a purchase at 2:30 and, at 2:31, the storm knocks out power to your area – for two weeks! (It could happen) Better to be safe than sorry.

6 – Personally, I wouldn’t order a new batch of inventory with a storm headed in my direction, either. But, that’s just me.

Search Engine Strategies

Write a Page Title. Write a descriptive title for each page of 5 to 8 words. Remove as many “filler” words from the title, such as “the,” “and,” etc. This page title will appear hyperlinked on the search engines when your page is found. Entice searchers to click on the title by making it a bit provocative. Place this at the top of the webpage between the HEAD tags. (It also shows on the blue bar at the top of your web browser.)

Plan to use some descriptive keywords along with your business name on your home page. Remember, this title is nearly your entire identity on the search engines. The more people see that interests them in the blue hyperlinked words on the search engine, the more likely they are to click on the link.

Write a Description and Keyword META Tag. The description should be a sentence or two describing the content of the webpage, using the main keywords and keyphrases on this page. If you include keywords that aren’t used on the webpage, you could hurt yourself. Place the Description META Tag at the top of the webpage, between the tags, in this format: Some search engines include this description below your hyperlinked title.

Your maximum number of characters should be about 255; just be aware that only the first 60 or so are visible on Google, though more may be indexed.

Include Your Keywords in Header Tags.

Make Sure Your Keywords Are in the First Paragraph of Your Body Text. Search engines expect that your first paragraph will contain the important keywords for the document — where most people write an introduction to the content of the page.

Use Keywords in Hyperlinks. Search engines are looking for clues to the focus of your page. When they see words hyperlinked in your body text, they consider these potentially important, so hyperlink your important keywords and keyphrases. To emphasize it even more, the webpage you are linking to could have a page name with the keyword or keyphrase, such as blue-widget.htm — another clue for the search engine.

Make Your Navigation System Search Engine Friendly.

Develop Several Pages Focused on Particular Keywords. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) specialists no longer recommend using external doorway or gateway pages, since nearly duplicate webpages might get you penalized. Rather, develop several webpages on your site, each of which is focused on a different keyword or keyphrase. For example, instead of listing all your services on a single webpage, try developing a separate webpage for each. These pages will rank higher for their keywords since they contain targeted rather than general content. You can’t fully optimize all the webpages in your site, but these focused-content webpages you’ll want to spend lots of time tweaking to improve their rank.

Write a Page Title. Write a descriptive title for each page of 5 to 8 words. Remove as many "filler" words from the title, such as "the," "and," etc. This page title will appear hyperlinked on the search engines when your page is found. Entice searchers to click on the title by making it a bit provocative. Place this at the top of the webpage between the HEAD tags. (It also shows on the blue bar at the top of your web browser.)

Plan to use some descriptive keywords along with your business name on your home page. Remember, this title is nearly your entire identity on the search engines. The more people see that interests them in the blue hyperlinked words on the search engine, the more likely they are to click on the link.

Write a Description and Keyword META Tag. The description should be a sentence or two describing the content of the webpage, using the main keywords and keyphrases on this page. If you include keywords that aren't used on the webpage, you could hurt yourself. Place the Description META Tag at the top of the webpage, between the tags, in this format: Some search engines include this description below your hyperlinked title.

Your maximum number of characters should be about 255; just be aware that only the first 60 or so are visible on Google, though more may be indexed.

Include Your Keywords in Header Tags.

Make Sure Your Keywords Are in the First Paragraph of Your Body Text. Search engines expect that your first paragraph will contain the important keywords for the document -- where most people write an introduction to the content of the page.

Use Keywords in Hyperlinks. Search engines are looking for clues to the focus of your page. When they see words hyperlinked in your body text, they consider these potentially important, so hyperlink your important keywords and keyphrases. To emphasize it even more, the webpage you are linking to could have a page name with the keyword or keyphrase, such as blue-widget.htm -- another clue for the search engine.

Make Your Navigation System Search Engine Friendly.

Develop Several Pages Focused on Particular Keywords. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) specialists no longer recommend using external doorway or gateway pages, since nearly duplicate webpages might get you penalized. Rather, develop several webpages on your site, each of which is focused on a different keyword or keyphrase. For example, instead of listing all your services on a single webpage, try developing a separate webpage for each. These pages will rank higher for their keywords since they contain targeted rather than general content. You can't fully optimize all the webpages in your site, but these focused-content webpages you'll want to spend lots of time tweaking to improve their rank.

Linking Strategies

Links to your site from other sites bring additional traffic. But since Google and other major search engines consider the number of incoming links to your website ("link popularity") as an important factor in ranking, more links will help you rank higher in the search engines, too. Google has introduced a 10-point scale called PageRank (10 is the highest rank) to indicate the quantity and quality of incoming links. All links, however, are not created equal. Links from popular information hubs will help your site rank higher than those from low traffic sites.

Submit Your Site to Key Directories, since a link from a directory will help your ranking -- and get you traffic. Be sure to list your site in the free Open Directory Project (http://www.dmoz.com), overseen by overworked volunteer human editors. This hierarchical directory provides content feeds to all the major search engines. Plus it provides a link to your site from an information hub that Google deems important. But don't be impatient and resubmit or you'll go to the end of the queue.

Yahoo! Directory is another important directory to be listed in. Real humans will read (and too often, pare down) your 200-character sentence, so be very careful and follow their instructions (http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/). Hint: Use somewhat less than the maximum number of characters allowable, so you don't have wordy text that will tempt the Yahoo! editor to begin chopping.

It is rare to have an opportunity to join a website in it's puberty and ride the wave to it's maturity and hopefuly old age. Bonanzle is that site and I am so proud to be a part of what will be the greatest site on the web. My journey began in October 2008 and since then the member count has grown from 10,000, 20,000, 30,000 and recently 40,000 with over 1.5 million items listed. I'm glad you asked! Squidoo is a combination of a website - a blog - a newsletter - and a photo album...

1.) Creating a lens is very easy.

2.) It is 100% FREE

3.) It is another way to link to your online store which gives you more credit as far as the web spiders are concerned - speaking of those little crawlers - they LOVE Squidoo and visit often so if you want your store noticed, link to it on a Squidoo lens.

4.) Need a place for your customers to be able to leave comments about your store? Or, do you want to get opinions about what is the hottest new color? Or, do you want to ask "Would you wear this?" (The applications for your business are endless and doing these things separate from your store will keep your store looking more professional.) Then make a lens for things like those too like I did - Here's mine so you can see what I mean : Click Here To Check Out Mine

5.) Are you looking for new customers and just hoping that they will find you? Again, Squidoo to the rescue! There are many of us who can tell you that we have had customers find us through one of our Squidoo lenses.

Remember how I told you that the search engine web-crawlers LOVE Squidoo? Well this really helps when a customer is looking for something that you have AND you have it on your lens. Ta Da - an email appears in your mailbox with a question from a potential customer or sometimes you will just get more orders out of the blue (out of the Squidoo blue that is - LOL)

6.) AND, you can have all of us who have Squidoo lenses join together to support each other by visiting each others lenses and rating and commenting... on them which makes them more popular and then the web-spiders will love them even more and then you can get even more customers and then... - Oh, well, you get the idea

PASSWORD SECURITY

How smart would it be to leave a key that fit the lock on your house, car, and safety deposit box lying around in public where anyone could grab it? Or your checkbook? Or your credit cars? That’s similar to what you may be doing with your all your on-line accounts if you are using a weak password .

What is a weak password? An easily remembered password is usually also easily hacked. Hack programs can speed through one attempt after another at guessing your password. Here are some rules of thumb for passwords that are less likely to be compromised.

WARNINGS and WHAT TO AVOID
Never, ever use identifying information for a password. Examples: Your name, social security number, phone number, birth date, names of family members or pets. All of this information is publically available, and the first things a hacker will try if they are working manually.

Avoid repetitive or sequential characters. Examples: 11111 or abcdef. It will take a ‘hack’ program only a matter of minutes (or seconds) to hit on these.

Avoid words chosen from the dictionary. Examples: rainbow or mechanic. Hack programs can run through the entire dictionary of the English language in pretty short order.

Never use the same password everywhere you log in. If someone guesses your ONE password, you’ve just handed them the keys to your kingdom!

Never log on to a password protected account from ANY public computer, anywhere, anytime, EVER! You don’t know who may have installed a keystroke recorder program on that computer.

Please don’t write passwords on a note stuck to the underside of your keyboard! How obvious is that??? And, of course, never divulge passwords to anyone.

PASSWORD SECURITY TIPS
Passwords should be AT LEAST eight characters long. Longer is better. The shorter your password, the more often you should CHANGE it. Don’t keep the same one forever.

Use a mix of upper case letters + lower case letters + numerals + special characters (like $ # ! * , etc.) Password Example: q3W*7!3xpL (This might actually mean something to me, but not anyone else.)

Think about security when writing a password down. You could divide it in half, and put the first half in an excel spreadsheet, then write the second half in the back of your manual address book, for example.

REMEMBER: Your passwords are as important as what they protect, and what they protect is only as safe as your passwords. IT'S UP TO YOU!

What, another Auction site...? Well, somewhat.

As a Baby Boomer and getting closer to retirement every day, I look at all the Stuff around me and ask.."What am I going to do with it?" My kids have a few favorite pieces they want, but it doesn't make much of a dent in the over all scheme of things.

So, I thought, I will put it on Ebay!

Looking at all the fee's, and all the changes taking place there, I think, NO WAY!! So, I will open my own site. Surely there are more Baby Boomers like me out there, wanting to find new homes for items we have collected over the years. And maybe not in a big hurry to sell at the lowest price. ( With the change in the economy, that last thought may have changed for some.)

So, Antique Tranding Post was born.

My idea is have small stores with Buy Out prices. Then, because in the past, I have loved going to auctions about once a month, I thought "Why not run 7 day auctions once a month." This way the store owners could put up items they weren't really sure the worth of. "Let it go to Auction!"

The site has been open since the 1st of February, and growing slowly. We are not quite ready to hold our first auction yet, for I feel we need a bit more growth, but am looking forward to it in the near future.

Overnight Auctions is really growing and expanding. We have had several new members in the last month join us on our Auction sites, and over 50 join our Community Forum . We are determined to see ONA grow and succeed, and we could not do that without our members. So, at this time, I'd like to extend a big THANK YOU to each and every member at Overnight Auctions.

Currently, we are running a Listing Contest, with the Grand Prize being a $20 gift from Mike (djind) to the member listing the most items. Don't forget to list your sites/lenses/pages... on the appropriate threads so that we can all support each other by visiting and commenting… on each of them - hopefully we get to them once a month.

If you list your links, You must agree to support the other sellers that are there by commenting or rating or favoriting... theirs too. This has to be a two-way arrangement or it will fall apart.

After you list your links in the thread, let us know which ones you have visited and commented on or favorited... (something that we can check) and then whoever's links you did will get to yours.

You do not have to do all of them at one time, in fact it is better if you can spread them out a little - just let us know each time you do some and what you did. I know we are all busy, but maybe we can take 5 minutes a day to try to get through the list of everyone's lenses and websites. Even if you do not do all of them as a few of us have a LOT - LOL - do as many as you can and the same number as how many you listed.

I visited everyone's Squidoo lenses the other day until my eyes went fuzzy because I know me - I would get busy with something else and forget - so I did them right then.

This took about 1½-2 hours because I actually read the whole lenses - hope the same is done for mine.

*** webspiders count the time someone is on your pages + I like reading how we got started, what we do, what's important to us, AND to be able to write decent comments we need to read the page - LOL

Right now what I do is to access the sellers homepages on different sites, pick an item or two at random and then click on the "I like it" thingy and write a rating. I figure it's exposure. From what I understand, the people that are out there on the 'net, searching, are picked up due to key words. Somehow, Stumble manages to come into play and it makes people able to find items that have been rated by others. Sort of like a Consumers Report for the on-line buying world.

Lesson #1 - Title, Meta Name Description, & Meta Keywords!!

There are many reasons why buyers are not finding us, but I will start off with the Basics.

Make sure you have your TITLE, META NAME DESCRIPTION, & META KEYWORDS on your site. This goes after: and

ALWAYS USE CORRECT SPELLING!!!!! - ALWAYS USE CORRECT SPELLING!!!!!

1. TITLE * From time to time you need to be fortunate to get a lot of traffic from search engines. You can greatly influence how much traffic you get from Google and the other search engines. Your Title should be clear using descriptive keywords of your site and something that your customers are trying to find on search.

2. META NAME DESCRIPTION * Make sure that you use DESCRIPTIVE keywords in describing your site and your products! Google likes no more than 250 characters in your meta name description area.

3. META KEYWORDS * Make sure that you are using keywords that your potential buyer is going to type into search to look for your items. Google likes no more than 250 characters in your meta keywords area. A Secret: Do a search on your items and type in things you think that your customers would type in to find you. Take a look at the top sites that pop up on search. Do a "VIEW PAGE SOURCE"! Look at all of their Title's, Meta Descriptions, & Meta Keywords. Then go to their sites and look at the titles and descriptions of the product.

You can usually find out why your items aren't showing up in search on the first page and theirs are. Now keep in mind this is just one reason.
